Hot Rum Drinks
A warm rum drink can be light and lemon-led, rich with chocolate or butter, or built around apple or coffee. Choose one style, then use its existing measured recipe. These are year-round warm-drink choices, not a second copy of our Christmas menu.
1. Hot Buttered Rum
A rich butter-and-spice mug for guests who prefer a fuller texture. Use the existing measured recipe rather than adding food rum butter by eye.
Before serving: Set out heatproof mugs and measure the ingredients; make the warm drink close to serving.
2. Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate
Cocoa and dark chocolate make this the chocolate-led option. The linked guide keeps its complete method and Christmas four-mug measurements.
Before serving: Chop the chocolate ahead, keep milk refrigerated, and stir the rum into each adult mug off the heat.
3. Spiced Hot Toddy
Honey, fresh lemon and hot water make a lighter-textured warm drink than butter or chocolate. Honey is added separately; it is not an ingredient claim about the rum.
Before serving: Squeeze and measure the lemon, set out honey and warm the mugs. Make each drink just before serving.
4. Mulled Spiced Rum
The existing four-serving recipe combines apple juice, orange and whole spices. Follow its serving count rather than filling a pot with unmeasured rum.
Before serving: Prepare the washed orange and whole spices, then warm the mixture gently without boiling.
5. Hot Black Coffee with Rum
A coffee-led alternative without milk or cream liqueur, built around freshly brewed coffee and a small measured rum portion.
Before serving: Have the coffee ready to brew and warm the mug. Add rum after brewing rather than heating the finished drink again.
6. Creamy Hot Rum Coffee
Warm milk gives a softer texture than the black-coffee serve. Its milk and plant-based choices stay with the original coffee recipe.
Before serving: Keep milk chilled until needed, warm it separately and mix the drink to order.
Warm mugs, measured rum
For the lemon-and-honey option, compare plain, spiced and aged bottles in our rum for a hot toddy guide, then use the existing recipe's measured method.
Use heatproof mugs, not delicate unheated cocktail glasses. Warm a suitable mug with hot water and empty it before mixing. Serve comfortably warm rather than scalding. See our rum glassware guidance for the other serving styles.
Dilay is our own cardamom-led rum. Its spices do not mean every drink needs extra cinnamon or chilli. Use the amount in the linked recipe; heating, water and milk do not turn an alcoholic drink into an alcohol-free one. Keep rum-free mugs separate and clearly identified.
For seasonal menu planning rather than warm drinks alone, see our Christmas rum cocktails. For a chilled coconut option, try Coquito.
Hot rum drink questions
Which hot rum drink should I choose?
Choose by texture and base: hot toddy for lemon and honey, hot chocolate for cocoa, hot buttered rum for richness, mulled rum for apple and whole spices, or a coffee drink for a brewed-coffee base. Follow the linked measured recipe.
Does heating a rum drink remove the alcohol?
No. Adding rum to a hot drink does not make it alcohol-free, and warming or cooking cannot be assumed to remove all alcohol. Make a separate rum-free serving for guests avoiding alcohol.
Is hot rum a remedy for a cold?
No. Rum is not a treatment for a cold. NHS advice recommends rest, fluids and a hot lemon-and-honey drink to soothe a sore throat; that is symptom relief, not evidence that adding rum treats the infection. Choose a rum-free warm drink for that purpose. The NHS advice does not recommend alcohol as a remedy.
Can I prepare hot rum drinks ahead?
Prepare mugs, garnish and measured ingredients ahead, then make the finished drinks close to serving. Keep milk and cream refrigerated and follow product instructions. Do not leave dairy mixtures standing through a gathering or assume rum preserves them.
