Coffee and Rum Cocktails: Hot & Iced Drinks
Published 24 October 2026
Coffee and rum work in more than a martini. For a warm serve, stir rum into freshly brewed black coffee or add warm milk. For an iced drink, use chilled coffee or cold brew over ice. The four suggested recipes below are single servings, with optional sweetness to suit your coffee.
1. Hot Black Coffee with Spiced Rum
Hot · Serves 1 · 5 minutes
A straightforward coffee-and-rum serve without milk or liqueur. Strong brewed coffee keeps the drink coffee-led, with aromatic spice from the rum.
Ingredients
- 30ml Dilay 1949 Panjabi Spiced Rum
- 150ml freshly brewed strong black coffee
- 1 tsp brown sugar (optional)
Method
- Warm a heatproof mug with hot water, then empty it.
- Brew the coffee and pour 150ml into the mug. Stir in the optional brown sugar until dissolved.
- Add 30ml rum and stir gently. Serve warm; do not return the finished drink to the heat.
Coffee note: Filter coffee or a strong cafetière brew works well here. This is a long hot drink, not a shot of espresso topped with rum.
2. Creamy Hot Rum Coffee
Hot · Serves 1 · 5 minutes
A softer, milk-led hot drink. Warm milk adds body without turning the recipe into hot buttered rum or a cream-topped espresso cocktail.
Ingredients
- 30ml Dilay 1949 Panjabi Spiced Rum
- 120ml freshly brewed strong coffee
- 60ml milk or barista oat drink
- 5ml sugar syrup (optional)
Method
- Brew the coffee and warm a heatproof mug with hot water; empty the mug.
- Warm the milk separately in a small pan until steaming, not boiling. Remove the pan from the heat.
- Pour the coffee into the mug, add the warm milk, then stir in the rum and optional syrup. Serve immediately.
Coffee note: Use a barista-style oat drink if avoiding dairy. The rum is vegan-friendly, but the finished drink's suitability depends on your milk and other ingredients.
3. Iced Coffee and Rum Highball
Iced · Serves 1 · 2 minutes with chilled coffee ready
A tall, black-coffee serve built directly over ice. It needs neither espresso foam nor coffee liqueur, so it stays distinct from an espresso martini.
Ingredients
- 40ml Dilay 1949 Panjabi Spiced Rum
- 120ml ready-to-drink cold brew or strong chilled coffee
- 5–10ml sugar syrup (optional)
- Ice cubes
Method
- Fill a highball glass with ice.
- Pour in the rum and chilled coffee. If using cold-brew concentrate, dilute it according to its label before measuring.
- Add optional syrup, stir gently and serve immediately.
Coffee note: Chill brewed coffee before using it. Pouring hot coffee onto the ice melts it quickly and gives a weaker drink.
4. Shaken Iced Rum Coffee with Milk
Iced · Serves 1 · 3 minutes with chilled coffee ready
A short, lightly frothy iced milk-and-coffee drink served over fresh ice. Cold brew, milk and rum provide a creamy alternative without copying the espresso martini's liqueur-and-espresso recipe.
Ingredients
- 35ml Dilay 1949 Panjabi Spiced Rum
- 80ml ready-to-drink cold brew
- 50ml cold milk or barista oat drink
- 5ml sugar syrup (optional)
- Ice cubes
Method
- Add the rum, cold brew, cold milk and optional syrup to a cocktail shaker.
- Fill the shaker with ice, seal it and shake for 10–15 seconds until chilled.
- Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Serve immediately.
Coffee note: Only shake cold ingredients. This drink has a light milk froth, not the crema layer of an espresso martini.
5. Spiced Rum Espresso Martini
Prefer a shaken coffee cocktail served straight up in a coupe? Our espresso martini uses fresh espresso and coffee liqueur, with spiced rum replacing vodka. Its full measures, method and foam tips are on the dedicated recipe page.
Choosing coffee, rum and sweetness
Use freshly brewed strong coffee for the hot serves. For iced drinks, let brewed coffee cool and refrigerate it first, or use ready-to-drink cold brew. Cold-brew concentrate needs dilution according to its label before you measure it.
Aged rum brings cask character, while spiced rum adds another aromatic layer. Dilay 1949 is a cardamom-led spiced rum with ginger, black pepper and gentle chilli warmth. It contains no added sugar; that does not make a cocktail with syrup, milk or liqueur sugar-free.
Never shake hot coffee or hot milk in a sealed shaker. Warm the coffee and milk separately, then add rum off the heat. Only the cold milk-and-coffee recipe here uses a shaker.
These are suggested adaptations of familiar rum-and-coffee combinations, not claims of a comparative tasting. Start with the optional syrup omitted if you prefer a less sweet drink.
Coffee and rum FAQs
Can you mix coffee and rum?
Yes. Use strong brewed coffee for a hot drink or ready-to-drink cold brew for an iced one. Add rum after brewing rather than heating the finished alcoholic drink. These suggested serves use 30–40ml rum per person.
Do coffee and rum cocktails need coffee liqueur?
No. The four hot and iced recipes here use coffee itself, with optional syrup for sweetness. The linked espresso martini is a separate option that includes coffee liqueur.
Can I use cold-brew concentrate?
Yes, but dilute it following the producer's directions before measuring. These recipes call for ready-to-drink coffee, not undiluted concentrate.
Can I use decaffeinated coffee?
Yes. Use decaf brewed coffee or decaf cold brew in the same measures. Coffee does not make alcohol less intoxicating or make it safe to drive.
Are these coffee cocktails sugar-free or dairy-free?
Not automatically. Dilay 1949 contains no added sugar, but milk, oat drinks, coffee liqueur and optional syrup may contain sugar. For a dairy-free serve, use black coffee or a suitable plant-based drink and check the other ingredients.
