Best Dark Rum: Four Bottles for Mixing and Sipping

'Dark rum' is a buying category, not a legal definition — colour can come from ageing or from added colouring, so the label tells you less than the producer's description does. This guide compares four dark rums across different jobs: an affordable Jamaican mixer, Bermuda's ginger-beer classic, a high-strength Guyanese mixing rum and a premium aged sipping bottle. Selection follows cited recommendations and verified UK listings, not a blind tasting, and none of them is a spiced rum.

We make Dilay 1949. These are editorial use-case suggestions based on published bottle information, not a blind tasting or a ranked score. Specifications checked 24 October 2026; check the linked listing and bottle label before buying. Prices and stock change.

    Bottle Specification Style
Myers's Original Dark 70cl · 40% ABV Dark Jamaican cocktail rum
Gosling's Black Seal 70cl · 40% ABV Dark Bermuda rum
    Wood's Old Navy Rum 70cl · 57% ABV High-strength Guyanese dark rum
El Dorado 15 Year Old 70cl · 43% ABV Aged Guyanese dark rum

    Myers's Original Dark

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 40% ABV, classified as dark rum from Jamaica and recommended by the merchant for cocktails; Difford's Guide records the fuller 'Original Dark' expression name at the same strength. Published accounts disagree over its production detail — one describes a five-year-minimum pot-still rum, another a pot-and-column blend and questions the age claim — so we state no age or still composition as fact.

Choose it for: The economical Jamaican choice for mixed dark-rum drinks. No verified evidence links Myers's to the Dark 'n Stormy name; that branded association belongs to Goslings.

    Gosling's Black Seal

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 40% ABV, blending pot- and continuous-still spirits with cooked-fruit and fruitcake notes. Liquor.com's dark-rum guide names Black Seal 'Best for Dark 'n Stormy', and the producer specifies it in its own Dark 'n Stormy® recipe — direct producer support, not our independent verdict. Black Seal 151 is a separate, much stronger expression listed in the UK at 75.5% ABV; do not interchange the two specifications.

Choose it for: The bottle for the named Dark 'n Stormy® classic, as documented in our Dark & Stormy buying guide. Its producer holds registered marks for the cocktail name in some markets; that supports identifying the drink with Goslings without claiming every rum-and-ginger-beer recipe worldwide.

    Wood's Old Navy Rum

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 57% ABV, classified as dark rum from Guyana, with toffee, caramel and muscovado notes. The merchant recommends it neat and in cocktails, and World Rum Guide includes it in its independently tasted dark-rum collection. The listing URL contains 'woods-100' from an earlier name; the displayed bottle is Wood's Old Navy at 57% — do not convert the old '100' name into an ABV claim.

Choose it for: A deliberately stronger mixing option — at 57%, a 50ml pour is 2.85 UK units, not the two units of a 40% bottle. Follow the producer's serve; a Wood's-based drink is not Goslings' branded Dark 'n Stormy®.

    El Dorado 15 Year Old

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 43% ABV, classified as dark rum from Guyana, with stewed stone fruit, prune and toffee notes. World Rum Guide includes the 15 Year Old among its independently tasted dark rums. Specialist reviews report a substantial reduction in apparent sweetening in bottles from around 2020, with corresponding flavour change; the exact reformulation date and current dosage are not producer-confirmed, so do not assume older tasting notes describe today's bottle.

Choose it for: The premium aged option for sipping or slow mixed drinks. Its award history is merchant-reported, not an independently verified current 'best overall' verdict.

    Darkness is not age

Liquor.com notes that dark rum has no single legal definition and that colour may come from ageing or added colouring. A dark bottle is not automatically older, richer or less sweetened than a lighter one, and this guide makes no purity claims — no 'no additives', 'no colouring' or 'no added sugar' statements are established for these four bottles.

Tasting notes that mention spice are attributed flavour descriptions from merchants and reviewers, not evidence of added spices. All four listings are classified as dark rum; none is a spiced-rum expression, and our spiced-brands coverage answers a different question.

Strength changes the same measured serving

At a fixed 50ml pour, the 40% bottles supply 2.0 UK units each, the 43% El Dorado supplies 2.15, and the 57% Wood's supplies 2.85. If you swap a 40% dark rum for Wood's in a mixed drink, the serve is nearly half as strong again from the rum alone — change the measure deliberately rather than by habit, and never assume a bottle's strength from its colour or its name.

Ice, cola or ginger beer dilute the drink but remove no alcohol. Check the actual bottle label before calculating units, and keep a separate alcohol-free option available for anyone avoiding alcohol.

How this differs from our other rum pages

Our Dark & Stormy buying guide answers a narrower question — which bottle for that named serve — while this page compares dark rum as a category. Our spiced-versus-dark comparison explains the flavour differences between the categories; our spiced-brands pages list flavour-led bottles including our own Dilay, which is not in this dark-rum selection.

The pictured unbranded bottles are an editorial illustration, not depictions of the named products. Selection is based on cited recommendations and published specifications; we have not tasted the bottles side by side.

    Questions before choosing

Is dark rum always aged longer than white rum?

No. 'Dark rum' has no single legal definition, and colour can come from ageing or added colouring. Judge a bottle by the producer's description of ageing and casks, not by its colour.

What is the strongest dark rum here?

Wood's Old Navy at 57% — a 50ml pour is 2.85 UK units, against 2.0 for the 40% bottles. Gosling's also makes a separate Black Seal 151 expression at 75.5% in the UK; that is a different bottle, not this listing.

Which dark rum makes an authentic Dark 'n Stormy?

Goslings names Black Seal in its Dark 'n Stormy® recipe, and that branded association is the verified one. A Myers's or Wood's highball is a different drink and should be described as such.

Is dark rum the same as spiced rum?

No. Dark rum describes colour and style; spiced rum has spices or botanicals added. Our spiced-versus-dark comparison explains the difference, and this guide's four bottles are all plain dark rums.
