    Coconut Rum Cocktails

These three recipes add coconut to the drink itself — coconut cream, sweetened cream of coconut or a coconut-and-dairy mixture — rather than relying on a coconut-flavoured rum bottle.

The distinction matters. Coconut-flavoured rum is a finished spirit with coconut flavouring already in the bottle, while these recipes pour ordinary rum and add measured coconut products separately. Each linked recipe keeps the two apart and states its own alcohol units.

    Piña Colada

    Coconut cream, stirred smooth

The IBA's 30ml coconut cream is concentrated and generally unsweetened; the linked recipe explains how it differs from cream of coconut and coconut milk, and keeps the choice consistent when comparing batches.

    Painkiller®

    Sweetened cream of coconut

This Pusser's-based serve uses 30ml sweetened cream of coconut — a cocktail product, not thin coconut milk. The linked page's first tip is exactly this distinction, because the products are not interchangeable at the same volume.

    Coquito

    The chilled festive one

A Puerto Rican chilled drink of coconut cream with evaporated and condensed milk and a small measured rum portion. It is egg-free, but egg-free does not mean dairy-free: the milks are dairy and the page carries allergen and chilled-handling guidance.

Coconut-flavoured rum is a different product

A coconut-flavoured rum already contains coconut flavouring, and its strength varies by brand. Using one in these recipes would mean removing the measured coconut product and changing the balance — and the unit statements would need recalculating from the actual bottle label rather than the assumed 40% used on these pages.

The linked recipes specify which coconut product to buy and how to handle it: coconut cream is concentrated and generally unsweetened, cream of coconut is a sweetened cocktail product, and coconut milk is thinner. Read the label and keep the chosen product consistent, especially when comparing two batches or two rums.

Coconut can cause allergic reactions even though coconut is not one of the UK's regulated nut allergens. Check labels, tell guests what the drink contains and never make an unconditional allergen-free claim about any of these serves.

    Coconut Rum Cocktails questions

Is coconut-flavoured rum the same as adding coconut cream?

No. Coconut-flavoured rum carries coconut flavouring in the bottle; these recipes add measured coconut products to ordinary rum. Substituting a coconut-flavoured bottle would double up the coconut, change the balance and require recalculating the units from that bottle's labelled strength.

Which coconut product does each drink use?

The Piña Colada recipe uses coconut cream; the Painkiller® uses sweetened cream of coconut; the Coquito uses coconut cream with separately sweetened condensed milk. Coconut milk is a thinner, different product and would need its own balancing rather than a direct swap.

    Is a coquito dairy-free?

No. The linked recipe contains evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk, both dairy. Egg-free does not mean dairy-free, and coconut is itself an allergen to flag. For guests avoiding dairy or alcohol, the linked page explains how to prepare and clearly label separate serves.

How much alcohol is in these coconut drinks?

At assumed 40% rum strength, the Piña Colada contains 2 UK units, the Painkiller® 2.4, and the small-serve Coquito about 1.2. Each linked page states its own figure at its stated strengths and counts every alcoholic ingredient; chilling a coquito does not remove alcohol.
