    ◆ THE RECIPE ◆
Illustration of a Blue Hawaiian cocktail

Blue Hawaiian is a creamy pineapple-and-coconut drink with rum, blue curaçao and lemon. It is not Harry Yee’s Blue Hawaii, which has a different vodka-and-rum structure and no cream of coconut in the cited comparison.

    Ingredients

    • — 45ml light rum (40% ABV assumed)
    • — 22.5ml blue curaçao liqueur (20% ABV assumed)
    • — 60ml pineapple juice
    • — 22.5ml sweetened cream of coconut
    • — 15ml fresh lemon juice
    • — Ice for shaking and crushed ice for serving
    • — Pineapple wedge and cherry, optional garnish

    Method

    1. Stir the cream of coconut smooth. Measure it with the rum, blue curaçao, pineapple and lemon into a shaker.
    2. Add ice and shake hard for 10–15 seconds to combine and chill.
    3. Strain into a hurricane glass filled with crushed ice. Add the optional fruit garnish and serve before the mixture separates.

The classic vs the spiced version

The liquid measures follow Liquor.com with 30ml per US ounce. A spiced variation replaces the 45ml light rum with 45ml Dilay. Its cardamom-led character changes the classic-style base and may alter the colour; keep the curaçao and coconut product unchanged.

    Tips for getting it right

    • — Use alcoholic blue curaçao, not blue syrup. ABVs vary widely; the 20% figure here is an assumption.
    • — Sweetened cream of coconut is not thin coconut milk or unsweetened coconut cream. Check labels and coconut allergies.
    • — A spiced or dark rum can change the blue colour as well as the flavour. The illustration is not evidence of a tested substitution.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Blue Hawaiian the same as Blue Hawaii?

No. This Blue Hawaiian contains sweetened cream of coconut. The cited publisher distinguishes Harry Yee’s Blue Hawaii, made with vodka, rum, blue curaçao, pineapple and sweet-and-sour.

    Can I use coconut milk?

It gives a thinner, less sweet result than cream of coconut. It is a change needing separate balancing, not a like-for-like substitution.

Dilay 1949 is our own spiced rum, for sipping as well as mixing. Any substitution described above is a maker’s adaptation, not part of the credited specification.

Approx. 2.25 UK units per serving from the measured alcoholic ingredients. Where a source gives US fluid ounces, our rounded conversion uses 30ml per ounce. Stated strengths are calculation assumptions, not verified specifications for every bottle. Bitters use an explicit house measure of 1ml per dash, not a universal dash conversion. Check all labels; dilution does not remove alcohol.
