The Spiced Rum Guide
Spiced Rum Calories and Nutrition
Last updated 25 July 2026
A 25ml single measure of spiced rum (around 40% ABV) contains roughly 55–65 calories, with most of that coming from the alcohol itself. Spiced rum has little to no protein, fat or fibre; any carbohydrate comes from added sugar, which varies by brand. The figures below are approximate — sweeter rums sit at the higher end.
Calories by measure
| Measure | Approx. calories |
|---|---|
| 25ml (UK single) | ~55–65 kcal |
| 35ml (UK large) | ~75–90 kcal |
| 50ml (double) | ~110–130 kcal |
| 100ml | ~220–260 kcal |
Where the calories come from
Two sources: the alcohol (about 7 calories per gram — the main contributor) and any added sugar. An unsweetened spiced rum is almost all alcohol calories; a sweeter one adds carbs on top. (Strength matters too — see spiced rum ABV.)
Mixers add the most
The rum is only part of the story. A sugary cola or lemonade can add as many calories as the measure itself, while soda water, diet mixers or a squeeze of lime add almost none. If you're watching intake, the mixer is the bigger lever.
Is spiced rum gluten-free?
Generally, yes. Rum is distilled from sugarcane or molasses, not grain, and distillation removes gluten proteins — so most spiced rum is considered gluten-free. If you're highly sensitive, check the label for any added flavourings and confirm with the producer.
Is spiced rum vegan?
Usually, yes — spiced rum doesn't typically use animal-derived ingredients or finings. As always, check the specific brand if it matters to you.
A note on units
At 40% ABV, a 25ml single is about one UK unit. UK guidance is to drink no more than 14 units a week. (More on strength and proof.)
