    The Spiced Rum Guide

How Strong Is Spiced Rum? ABV and Proof Explained

    Last updated 25 July 2026

    ◆ STRENGTH & LABELS ◆

Most spiced rums are between 35% and 40% ABV (alcohol by volume). In the UK and EU, a spirit must be at least 37.5% ABV to be legally called "rum" — so anything weaker is sold as a "spiced spirit drink" rather than a true spiced rum.

    The typical range

The bulk of spiced rums land at 37.5% or 40% ABV. Premium and small-batch rums tend to sit at the top of that range; cheaper or lower-strength products often dip to 35% or below and take the "spirit drink" label.

    The 37.5% rule

It's the line that matters on the shelf: 37.5% ABV is the legal minimum for the word "rum" in the UK and EU. Below it, a product can be spiced and rum-based but must be described as a "spiced spirit drink." Strength isn't the only marker of quality, but it's a quick tell.

    What does "proof" mean?

Proof is an older way of stating strength. In the US, proof is simply double the ABV — so 40% ABV is "80 proof." The historical UK proof system was different (57.15% ABV was "100 proof"), which is why you'll see the term used loosely. Today, ABV is the figure to go by.

    How does it compare?

Spiced rum (≈35–40%) sits in the same range as most whisky, gin and vodka, and is stronger than fortified wines like sherry or port (≈15–20%). It's the spice, not the strength, that sets it apart. (See what spiced rum is.)

    A note on units

At 40% ABV, a 25ml single measure of spiced rum is about one UK unit of alcohol; a 35ml measure is around 1.4 units. Worth keeping in mind for pacing — the UK guidance is no more than 14 units a week. (More on spiced rum calories.)

    Dilay 1949

Dilay is bottled at 40% ABV — a full-strength spiced rum, so the spices carry properly whether you drink it neat, over ice or mixed. Buy Dilay 1949 Panjabi Spiced Rum to taste it.

Dilay is for adults of legal drinking age. Please drink responsibly.
