    ◆ THE RECIPE ◆
Golden passionfruit Hurricane in a curved glass with lemon garnish

This original-style Hurricane uses dark Jamaican rum, passionfruit syrup and lemon rather than a long list of fruit juices. Our smaller house serving scales a cited classic-style recipe; other Hurricanes have different proportions and ingredients.

    Ingredients

    • — 50ml dark Jamaican rum (40% ABV assumed)
    • — 25ml passionfruit syrup
    • — 25ml fresh lemon juice
    • — Ice cubes for shaking and serving
    • — A washed lemon wheel, optional garnish

    Method

    1. Chill the glass and measure the rum, passionfruit syrup and lemon juice into a shaker.
    2. Add ice and shake for 10–15 seconds until cold.
    3. Fill the glass with fresh ice and strain the cocktail over it.
    4. Garnish with lemon and serve promptly. This is a small liquid measure in a curved glass, not an instruction to fill it with additional rum.

    Why it works

Passionfruit syrup supplies sweetness and fruit while lemon supplies acidity. The short ingredient list keeps the rum evident. We make Dilay; our suggested substitution is an optional maker's variation, not a historical ownership claim.

The classic vs the spiced version

Difford's Guide records an original-style formula built around dark Jamaican rum, passionfruit syrup and lemon. We use a scaled 50ml/25ml/25ml house serving. Replace the 50ml rum with 50ml Dilay for a clearly identified spiced variation; its cardamom and ginger make a different base, not the named Jamaican original.

    Tips for getting it right

    • — Passionfruit syrup is sweetened; passionfruit juice or purée does not give the same balance at the same volume.
    • — Use fresh lemon and change the next serving in small syrup increments if your syrup is unusually sweet.
    • — For a longer drink, add chilled soda after straining. The measured rum remains the same and dilution does not reduce its alcohol units.
    • — Do not add a second rum measure to fill a large glass. Use plenty of ice or a smaller glass.

    Frequently asked questions

Does a Hurricane need orange juice?

Not this original-style three-ingredient version. Later fruit-juice versions exist, but they are different recipes.

    Can I use passionfruit purée?

Purée and sweetened syrup have different sugar and water contents. Treat purée as a separate adaptation rather than assuming a direct swap.

How many units are in this serving?

The measured 50ml rum at 40% contains two UK units. Higher-strength rum changes that figure; mixers and melting ice do not remove alcohol.
