Best Rum for a Mojito: White Cuban Rum and Three Alternatives

The IBA Mojito names its rum precisely: 45ml of white Cuban rum. That category, not a brand, is the classic starting point. Around it, drinks writers recommend a Cuban aged white rum, a Guyanese aged white rum and — as a clearly labelled darker variation — a Trinidad-and-Jamaica blend. The fourth bottle is our own spiced rum, included as a disclosed first-party entry. Three are style choices supported by cited sources; our own bottle is not, and its label says so. None of this is a tasting podium, and we have not mixed the bottles side by side.

We make Dilay 1949. These are editorial use-case suggestions based on published bottle information, not a blind tasting or a ranked score. Specifications checked 24 October 2026; check the linked listing and bottle label before buying. Prices and stock change.

    Bottle Specification Style
Havana Club Original Añejo 3 Year Old 70cl · 37.5% ABV Cuban aged white rum
El Dorado 3 Year Old White Rum 70cl · 40% ABV Guyanese aged white rum
Planteray Original Dark Double Aged 70cl · 40% ABV Dark Trinidad-and-Jamaica blend, Cognac-cask finished
Dilay 1949 Panjabi Spiced Rum 70cl · 40% ABV Cardamom-led spiced rum; made by us

Havana Club Original Añejo 3 Year Old

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 37.5% ABV — not the 40% figure shown in some other markets. Liquor.com names Havana Club 3 Year Old its 'Best Cuban' mojito rum, and Food & Wine's bartender-led guide includes the Cuban bottle. The white rum is made and aged in Cuba; do not confuse it with the separately produced Havana Club sold in other markets.

Choose it for: The strongest-verified choice here: Havana Club's own UK Mojito recipe specifies 40ml Havana Club Original 3 Años. Producer support for the bottle, plus the IBA's white Cuban rum category, make this the classic direction.

El Dorado 3 Year Old White Rum

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 40% ABV, describing a dry, medium-bodied palate with brown-sugar, nutty and coconut notes. Liquor.com selects El Dorado 3 Year Old as its 'Best Aged Rum' for mojitos — an editorial category, not a claim that this is a dark rum; it is a white rum with ageing.

Choose it for: A non-Cuban white-rum direction when you want aged character from Guyana instead. The recommendation rests on independent drinks writing, not a producer mojito recipe.

    Planteray Original Dark Double Aged

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 40% ABV, describing aged Trinidad and Jamaican rums further aged in Cognac casks. Master of Malt documents the brand's change of name from Plantation to Planteray. Liquor.com's mojito guide names Plantation Original Dark 'Best Dark Rum'; that article predates the revamp the merchant describes, so treat it as an expression-level recommendation rather than a verified verdict on today's liquid.

Choose it for: A deliberately darker variation, matching the 'dirty mojito' direction our existing recipe describes — dark rum in place of white, with demerara syrup. It is not the IBA's named style, and the colour change is a choice, not an upgrade.

    Dilay 1949 Panjabi Spiced Rum

Our official shop lists the 70cl bottle at 40% ABV, with cardamom, ginger, black pepper and chilli. We make this rum, so the entry carries no independent endorsement: no merchant recommendation or drinks-writer citation supports it in this guide.

Choose it for: The spiced variation behind our existing measured mojito recipe — cardamom and ginger warmth behind the mint and lime, not the IBA's white Cuban category. Read it as a first-party recommendation, the way the Planteray entry above is a labelled darker variation rather than the classic.

White Cuban rum is the named category

The IBA Mojito specifies '45 ml White Cuban Ron'. That is a production category — white rum, made in Cuba — not a brand endorsement. The El Dorado option is a deliberate move outside the named category to Guyana; the Planteray option steps outside it again to a dark blend. Each is a labelled change, not a closer approximation of the classic.

Ageing in white rum is normal: the two white bottles here are both aged before filtering. Do not judge age or character by colour alone, and do not assume 'white' means unaged or interchangeable with any white spirit.

    Where the spiced version fits

Our existing measured recipe is a spiced-rum mojito made with our own Dilay — cardamom, ginger and black pepper behind the mint and lime. Dilay appears in the table above as the fourth bottle, labelled as the maker's own product: we make it, spiced rum is not the IBA's named category, and the classic is a white-rum drink. The recipe page also carries the dark-rum 'dirty mojito' variation, which is where the Planteray bottle above fits.

The pictured unbranded bottle is an editorial illustration, not a depiction of any recommended product. This guide compares published product information and cited recommendations; it does not repeat the mojito ingredients or method.

Strength changes the same measured serving

At a fixed 50ml rum measure, the 37.5% Havana Club supplies 1.875 UK units, while the two 40% bottles supply 2.0 each. The IBA's 45ml measure changes the figures again — 1.69 at 37.5%, 1.8 at 40%. Check the actual bottle label before calculating, and keep mint, lime and syrup measured when you swap bottles; changing the rum does not license changing the rest.

None of these figures is a quality ranking. A higher ABV is not a better mojito, and ice dilution does not remove any alcohol poured.

    Questions before choosing

What rum does the IBA use for a mojito?

The IBA Mojito names '45 ml White Cuban Ron' — white Cuban rum. It specifies a category rather than a brand, and not a generic 'light rum' or any dark or spiced style.

Is dark rum acceptable in a mojito?

Yes, as a clearly labelled variation — the informal 'dirty mojito'. Liquor.com names a dark rum among its mojito recommendations, and our existing recipe carries its own dark-rum variation. It is a different drink from the IBA classic, not a substitute for it.

Why is the same Havana Club bottle in your daiquiri and mojito guides?

Because the same bottle genuinely suits both: the IBA names white Cuban rum for each drink, and Havana Club's own mojito recipe names the 3 Year Old. The guides answer different questions and link to different recipes.

Can I use spiced rum in a mojito?

You can. Our own bottle appears in the table above as a labelled first-party entry, and the existing recipe shows how — a spiced adaptation, not the IBA classic. Expect cardamom and ginger warmth behind the mint and lime rather than the cleaner white-rum profile.
