Best British Rum: Five Rums Actually Distilled in the UK

Many rums sold in Britain are blended, spiced or merely bottled here from Caribbean spirit. This guide is narrower: five rums whose producers state they ferment and distill in England or Scotland. Selection is based on verified distillation provenance and current UK availability, not comparative tasting — we have not ranked their flavour.

We make Dilay 1949. These are editorial use-case suggestions based on published bottle information, not a blind tasting or a ranked score. Specifications checked 24 October 2026; check the linked listing and bottle label before buying. Prices and stock change.

    DropWorks Clear Drop Rum

The producer states Clear Drop is fermented, distilled and blended at its Welbeck distillery in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. The official listing and Master of Malt agree on 70cl at 40% ABV.

Choose it for: The clearest verified example of English rum made from scratch, with matching official and merchant specifications. A white-rum choice for mixing rather than a spiced or aged sipper.

    Morvenna White Rum

The Cornish Distilling Co. describes Morvenna as molasses-based rum fermented, distilled and bottled at its distillery near Bude, Cornwall. The distillery shop and The Whisky Exchange list 70cl at 40% ABV.

Choose it for: A Cornish white rum with an independently purchasable merchant listing. Another mixing-style bottle rather than a spiced product.

    Matugga Golden

Matugga describes its rums as distilled from scratch in Scotland, with its distillery in Livingston. The official Golden listing is 70cl at 42% ABV and describes ex-bourbon cask maturation; one merchant's copy says English oak, so follow the producer's current description.

Choose it for: The aged option in this selection, for those who want a British-distilled rum with cask character. Matugga also makes a spiced expression, which belongs to our spiced-brands coverage rather than this provenance list.

    Retribution White Rum

Retribution ferments 100% molasses and double pot-distills at its distillery in Frome, Somerset. The official shop lists the White Rum at 70cl, 44% ABV; some independent stockists have shown it as sold out.

Choose it for: A higher-strength English white rum for those who want a pot-still character. At 44%, a 50ml pour is 2.2 UK units rather than the two units of a 40% bottle.

    Ninefold Pure Single Rum

Ninefold distills from scratch from sugarcane molasses at Dormont Home Farm near Lockerbie. The official current listing is 46% ABV with a 70cl refill option; a merchant lists an earlier 40% version, so check the bottle you are buying rather than combining the two specifications.

Choose it for: A Scottish pot-still white rum and the strongest bottle in this selection. At 46%, a 50ml pour is 2.3 UK units. Confirm the current bottle's size and strength on the label before purchase.

    What counts as British rum?

This guide uses a distillation test: the producer states that fermentation and distillation happen at its own British distillery. That excludes many familiar names. Cut Rum's own process page says most of its rum comes from Jamaica; Equiano is an African and Caribbean blend; The Duppy Share's range is built on Jamaican and Bajan rum. These are legitimate products — they simply are not distilled in Britain.

Britain has no sugar-cane climate, so British-distilled rum is made from imported molasses or sugar-cane products. 'British rum' describes where the spirit is made, not where its raw material grew.

    British-crafted is not British-distilled

Some brands genuinely spice, smoke, blend and bottle in Britain using imported rum. Burning Barn, for example, crafts and bottles in Warwickshire with base rum sourced from Guyana's Diamond Distillery. That is honest British production of a different kind, and it belongs in our spiced-brands coverage rather than this distillation list.

The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency, not part of the UK. Outlier distills its Hoolie rum (41%, 70cl) at Ballakelly Farm in Andreas — genuine small-scale distillation, but Manx rather than British. Sugar House in Dumbarton is a verified sixth Scottish producer, though its White Rum (43%, 70cl) was out of stock at every listing we checked, so it is noted here rather than recommended above.

How this differs from our spiced-brands guide

Our spiced rum brands page compares flavour-led bottles sold in the UK, wherever they are distilled. This page answers a different question: which rums are actually made here. Dilay, our own spiced rum, is not in this list — like most British spiced rums, it is crafted from imported Caribbean rum, and we say so plainly.

None of these selections is a tasting verdict. Strengths range from 40% to 46%, so the same 50ml pour ranges from two to 2.3 UK units; check each label. The pictured unbranded bottles are an editorial illustration, not the products named.

    Questions before choosing

Is any rum actually distilled in the UK?

Yes. DropWorks (Nottinghamshire), Morvenna (Cornwall), Retribution (Somerset), Matugga (Livingston), Ninefold (Dumfries & Galloway) and Sugar House (Dumbarton) all state they ferment and distill at their own British distilleries.

Is British rum made from British sugar cane?

No. Britain's climate does not support sugar cane, so British distillers import molasses or cane products and ferment and distill them here. 'British rum' refers to where the spirit is made.

Why are Cut Rum, Equiano and The Duppy Share not listed?

Their own published information identifies Caribbean or African distillation. They are established brands sold in Britain, but they do not meet this page's distilled-in-Britain inclusion rule.

    Is Dilay a British-distilled rum?

No, and we do not claim otherwise. Dilay is our spiced rum crafted from imported Caribbean rum. This page is a provenance guide; Dilay appears in our spiced-rum coverage instead.
