The Spiced Rum Guide

# What Is Spiced Rum?

Last updated 15 June 2026

◆ A SIMPLE GUIDE ◆

**Spiced rum is rum — a spirit distilled from sugarcane or molasses — infused with spices and natural flavourings such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cardamom, clove and vanilla.** It's usually golden to dark in colour, bottled at around 35–40% ABV, and tastes warmer, rounder and a little sweeter than unspiced rum. In short: take a good rum, layer in warming spice, and you have spiced rum.

It's one of the oldest ideas in drinking — sailors and spice traders flavoured their rum long before it was a category on a shelf — and today it's among the most popular ways people enjoy rum, precisely because the spice makes it so easy to drink.

## What spiced rum is made from

Every spiced rum starts with a rum base, distilled from sugarcane juice or molasses. From there, the producer adds a blend of spices and flavourings — and that blend is what gives each rum its character. Common ones include:

- Sweet baking spices — cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, clove
- Warm aromatics — ginger, cardamom, allspice
- Brighter notes — orange or citrus peel, and sometimes pepper or chilli for a little heat

The base rum can be white, golden or dark, and some are lightly sweetened. If you want the detail, we go deeper on the spices in spiced rum and on how spiced rum is made.

## What does spiced rum taste like?

Warm and aromatic. The first thing you notice is sweet spice — cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg — usually grounded by ginger, with citrus or pepper lifting the finish. Because the spices soften the spirit, spiced rum is typically rounder and more approachable than plain rum, which is why it works so well both neat and mixed. The exact profile varies a lot by producer: some lean sweet and dessert-like, others dry, peppery or chilli-warmed.

Is spiced rum sweet? Usually lightly sweet rather than sugary — the vanilla and warm spices create an impression of sweetness even when little or no sugar is added — but it ranges from gently sweet to genuinely dry depending on the brand.

## Spiced rum vs other rums

The quick version: dark rum gets its colour and depth from ageing in barrels, while spiced rum gets its character from added spices and flavourings. A spiced rum can be built on a white, golden or dark base — so "spiced" describes the flavouring, not the colour or age. We break the differences down fully in spiced rum vs dark rum and the wider types of spiced rum.

## How strong is spiced rum?

Most spiced rums sit between 35% and 40% ABV. Anything lower is usually a "spiced spirit drink" rather than a true spiced rum. (More on spiced rum ABV and strength.)

## How do you drink spiced rum?

Three easy ways:

- Neat or over ice — the clearest way to taste the spices.
- With a mixer — most popularly ginger beer or ginger ale, cola, or lemonade.
- In cocktails — an old fashioned, a dark and stormy, or a rum punch.

We cover all of it in how to drink spiced rum and our spiced rum cocktails guide.

## Where Dilay 1949 fits

Dilay 1949 is a Panjabi spiced rum — our spice blend comes from the kitchen spice box rather than the standard playbook: cardamom, ginger, black pepper and a slow chilli warmth, with no added sugar. It's smooth and full of character, bottled at 40% in small batches. If you want to taste what "spiced rum" can be when the spices come from the Panjab, Buy Dilay 1949 Panjabi Spiced Rum (https://shop.dilay1949spicedrum.com/) and try it yourself.
