# Best White Rum: Five Bottles from Mixing to Overproof

White rum is the IBA's named category for the Daiquiri and Cuba Libre, but 'white' covers a wide range: light charcoal-filtered mixers, aged-but-filtered rums with real cask character, and Jamaican overproof in a different league of strength. This guide compares five bottles across that range, following cited recommendations and verified UK listings — not a blind tasting, and none of them is a spiced rum.

We make Dilay 1949. These are editorial use-case suggestions based on published bottle information, not a blind tasting or a ranked score. Specifications checked 24 October 2026; check the linked listing and bottle label before buying. Prices and stock change.

## Choose the style that fits

| Bottle | Specification | Style |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Don Q Cristal | 70cl · 40% ABV | Light-bodied Puerto Rican white rum |
| Ron Santiago de Cuba Carta Blanca | 70cl · 38% ABV | Light Cuban rum, oak-aged and filtered |
| Planteray 3 Stars White Rum | 70cl · 41.2% ABV | Caribbean blend with aged components, carbon-filtered |
| Diplomático Planas | 70cl · 47% ABV | Venezuelan aged white rum, charcoal-filtered |
| Wray and Nephew White Overproof | 70cl · 63% ABV | Jamaican overproof white rum |

## Don Q Cristal

The linked UK Master of Malt range page lists Don Q Cristal at 70cl and 40% ABV — a range-page verification rather than an individual product page. Difford's Guide calls it a 'superbly clean light white rum' for cocktails, describing continuous distillation, ex-bourbon-cask ageing and charcoal filtration. Age descriptions differ: Difford's says at least one year, the producer says 1½–5 years in American white oak; we quote neither as settled fact.

**Choose it for:** The light-style mixing choice when you want the cleanest backdrop for lime and sugar. Not an age-statement rum, despite resting in cask before filtration.

Check Don Q Cristal →: https://www.masterofmalt.com/distilleries/don-q-rum/

## Ron Santiago de Cuba Carta Blanca

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 38% ABV — notably lower than the 37.5%–47% spread elsewhere here and the 40% many buyers assume. Difford's independently records 38% and describes a 'typically characterful Cuban light rum' with grassy and vanilla notes, aged in oak and filtered to remove colour. Difford's records no age statement; we invent none.

**Choose it for:** A Cuban direction at a lower strength and price point. At 38%, a 50ml pour is 1.9 UK units — check the label rather than assuming two units.

Check Ron Santiago de Cuba Carta Blanca →: https://www.masterofmalt.com/rum/santiago-de-cuba/santiago-de-cuba-carta-blanca-rum/

## Planteray 3 Stars White Rum

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 41.2% ABV, blending rums from Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados, with carbon filtration removing colour from the aged components. Liquor.com names the same expression 'best white rum for a Daiquiri' under the former Plantation name; Master of Malt documents the brand's move to Planteray, and the producer's current technical sheet specifies the present blend composition. Treat the recommendation as expression-level, written before the revamp.

**Choose it for:** The affordable all-rounder when one bottle must cover daiquiris, mojitos and long mixed drinks. Its unusual 41.2% strength changes the units slightly — 2.06 per 50ml pour.

## Diplomático Planas

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 47% ABV, charcoal-filtered after ageing, with vanilla, coconut and toffee notes. Liquor.com includes Planas as its white rum aged over five years, describing ageing up to six years — we say 'up to six', not a categorical age statement. A separate specialist listing records 46%, and we could not resolve whether that reflects market or data differences; 47% applies to the linked UK listing only. Check the label before purchase.

**Choose it for:** The richer aged-white option when you want cask character that survives filtration. Higher strength is not a quality ranking — at 47%, a 50ml pour is 2.35 UK units.

Check Diplomático Planas →: https://www.masterofmalt.com/rum/diplomatico/diplomatico-planas-rum/

## Wray and Nephew White Overproof

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 63% ABV, explicitly classified as white rum, with fruit, banana and molasses notes. Liquor.com names it best overproof white rum; a specialist review describes pot and column distillation combined, so it is not a pure pot-still rum. The '126 proof' figure corresponds to this same 63% listing, not a different strength.

**Choose it for:** A deliberately high-strength Jamaican option for drinks built around its assertive character — a 50ml pour is 3.15 UK units, more than a standard-strength bottle and a half. Measure carefully; it is not an interchangeable substitute in recipes written for 40% rum.

## White does not mean unaged

Three of the five bottles here are aged before filtration: Santiago de Cuba is oak-aged and filtered, Don Q Cristal rests in ex-bourbon casks, Planteray 3 Stars contains aged components, and Planas is charcoal-filtered after up to six years. Filtration can remove barrel colour while leaving the flavour — so colour alone tells you nothing about maturation.

Do not assume identical processing across the category either: filtration methods and ageing regimes differ by producer, and the merchant descriptions above are the evidence for each bottle, not a category-wide rule.

## Strength spreads from 38% to 63%

At the fixed 50ml measure our existing recipes use, the spread matters: Santiago de Cuba at 38% is 1.9 UK units, the 40% and 41.2% bottles are 2.0–2.06, Planas at 47% is 2.35, and Wray & Nephew at 63% is 3.15. An overproof white rum is a different tool, not a stronger version of the same mixer — halve the measure if you substitute it into a 40% recipe, and recalculate rather than guess.

The IBA Daiquiri and Cuba Libre name white rum generically. Our daiquiri and mojito buying guides compare three classic white bottles each; this page widens the field with five different directions. The pictured unbranded bottles are an editorial illustration, not the named products.

## Plain white, not spiced

All five listings are classified as white rum. Flavour descriptors such as coconut, vanilla or spice in tasting notes describe perception, not added ingredients — none of these bottles is a spiced rum, and none carries added flavouring in its verified description.

Our own Dilay is a spiced rum and therefore does not appear in this comparison; our spiced-brands pages cover that category. We make Dilay, so we keep the categories honest: this page answers the plain-white-rum question.

## Questions before choosing

### Is white rum always unaged?

No. Several bottles here are aged before charcoal or carbon filtration removes the barrel colour. Judge age by the producer's description, not by colour.

### Which white rum is strongest?

Wray and Nephew White Overproof at 63% — a 50ml pour is 3.15 UK units. It is an overproof specialty, not an interchangeable swap for a 40% bottle in an existing recipe.

### Why are strengths like 38% and 41.2% listed instead of 40%?

Because those are the verified strengths of the exact linked UK listings. White rum strengths vary more than buyers expect, and unit calculations must use the bottle's labelled ABV.

### Does this replace your daiquiri and mojito rum guides?

No. Those guides answer drink-specific questions with their own cited bottles; this page compares white rum as a category. They cross-reference rather than compete.
