# Best Rum for Rum & Coke: White, Golden and Aged

The IBA Cuba Libre specifies 50ml white rum, 120ml cola and 10ml fresh lime juice — a rum category, not a brand, and 'cola', not one named product. Around that baseline, this guide compares a golden Cuban mixing rum, a Nicaraguan white rum and a rich aged Cuban rum, all named in published sources for this drink. These are style choices with cited support, not a tasting podium, and we have not ranked the bottles blind.

We make Dilay 1949. These are editorial use-case suggestions based on published bottle information, not a blind tasting or a ranked score. Specifications checked 24 October 2026; check the linked listing and bottle label before buying. Prices and stock change.

## Choose the style that fits

| Bottle | Specification | Style |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Havana Club Especial | 70cl · 37.5% ABV | Golden Cuban rum |
| Flor de Caña 4 Extra Seco | 70cl · 37.5% ABV | Nicaraguan white mixing rum |
| Havana Club Añejo 7 Year Old | 70cl · 40% ABV | Rich aged Cuban dark rum |

## Havana Club Especial

The linked Master of Malt brand catalogue lists Especial at 70cl and 37.5% ABV; the individual product page was not directly accessible, so this verifies the catalogue entry rather than a checkout page. Havana Club's own UK Cuba Libre recipe names 50ml Havana Club Especial with lime and 100ml cola, and a Difford's-hosted Havana Club recipe hub names '50 ml Havana Club 7 or Havana Club Especial'. Those are branded-source recommendations, not independent blind-test endorsements.

**Choose it for:** The bottle with direct producer support for this drink. A golden-rum direction when you want more caramel body than a white rum gives, without moving to an aged sipping style.

## Flor de Caña 4 Extra Seco

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 37.5% ABV. Tasting Table's rum-and-Coke guide selects Flor de Caña 4 Year Extra Seco, describing a light white rum whose nutty and vanilla character contributes without overpowering the cola. Note that a separate UK listing shows a 40% Flor de Caña 4 Extra Seco bottling — check the label and do not combine the two specifications.

**Choose it for:** The white-rum direction the IBA category points to, from an independent drinks writer rather than a brand recipe. The writer names the expression without confirming that exact UK bottling, so treat the ABV as a listing fact, not a tasting constant.

## Havana Club Añejo 7 Year Old

The linked UK listing is 70cl at 40% ABV, described as a dark rum originally intended for sipping neat, with toffee, coffee, spice and cedar notes. The Difford's-hosted Havana Club hub names Havana Club 7 alongside Especial for a Cuba Libre. That is branded recipe-hub support — a legitimate producer serve, not an independent verdict.

**Choose it for:** The aged direction, for a rum-and-Coke where the spirit's own character shows through the cola. A richer choice, not an upgrade: the IBA category remains white rum.

## Two Havana choices, one named producer recipe

Havana Club appears twice because its own UK Cuba Libre recipe names Especial, and the Difford's-hosted recipe hub names both Especial and the 7 Year Old. We are not affiliated with Havana Club, and these are branded sources — useful evidence of what the producer intends, not proof either bottle outperforms the Flor de Caña.

The IBA names white rum, so the Especial and 7 Year Old choices are deliberate departures from the named category — golden and aged styles respectively. Choose by the style you want, and say which you made rather than presenting any of them as the definitive version.

## Strength and the fixed 50ml pour

At the fixed 50ml rum measure our existing recipe uses, both 37.5% bottles supply 1.875 UK units and the 40% bottle supplies 2.0. The IBA's 120ml cola and 10ml lime are the non-alcoholic balance; cola, ice and dilution do not remove alcohol poured. If you follow the IBA's 50ml measure, the figures above still hold — but check the label, because the Flor de Caña 4 has a separate 40% UK listing.

Cola choice changes sweetness, not the rum's units, and the existing recipe's no-added-sugar point applies to the rum, not the mixer. Diet and full-sugar cola make differently balanced drinks at identical strength.

## Where the spiced version fits

Our existing recipe is a spiced rum and Coke built around our own Dilay, with a measured Cuba Libre variation adding 15ml lime juice. We make Dilay, and it is not in the table above for two honest reasons: the IBA's named category is white rum, and each of the three bottles here carries a cited third-party or producer recommendation that our own bottle does not. That is an editorial line, not a claim that spiced rum is wrong for the drink — if you want our rum in a rum-and-Coke, make the measured recipe, which is a labelled adaptation rather than part of this bottle comparison.

The pictured unbranded bottle is an editorial illustration, not a depiction of any recommended product. This guide compares published specifications and cited recommendations; it does not repeat the recipe's ingredients, ratios or method.

## Questions before choosing

### What rum does the IBA specify for a Cuba Libre?

The IBA Cuba Libre specifies 50ml white rum with 120ml cola and 10ml fresh lime juice. It names a category, not a brand, and says 'cola' rather than naming a specific product.

### Should I use white, golden or aged rum with Coke?

White rum matches the IBA category; golden rum adds caramel body, as Havana Club's own recipe shows with Especial; an aged rum like the 7 Year Old lets the spirit show through. Each is a different drink, not a better or worse version.

### Does the aged bottle change the alcohol units?

At the same 50ml measure, the 40% Añejo 7 supplies 2.0 UK units against 1.875 for the 37.5% bottles. Strength, not age, changes the units — and only the rum's labelled ABV counts in the calculation.

### Can I use spiced rum instead?

Yes, as a labelled adaptation — our existing spiced rum and Coke recipe is exactly that, with a measured Cuba Libre variation. It is not part of this white-and-aged comparison and not the IBA's named style.
